Project Details:

Level Designer - Team size 14

3v1 asymmetrical party game (Unreal Engine 4)

Onboarded and worked on project: January-May 2022

Responsibilities:

Level Designer, Updating Tutorial, Documentation, Assisting with running QA Testing

This is the City level as it was when I was onboarded to the team. As it was there were a lot of details and parts of the map that worked well, but issues such as players feeling claustrophobic and the level feeling too confined lead us to look at reworking the level.

Looking at feedback and QA data with the Lead Level Designer, we decided to look at more open layouts. Rapidly iterating we came up with multiple potential layouts and went forward with one. However, more QA data revealed that the level was too open.

With the level being too open, we opted to try making a version that cut features that the map had utilized since it’s initial concept. The main aspect being the river(s) that go across the map vertically. After all these changes we decided to revisit the original layout with the knowledge from the iterations we worked on.

Revisiting the original layout, we added more space throughout the level. A big change came from utilizing updated art assets to have 2 stand out landmarks on the left and right of the map. As well as the very open park in the center, allowing players a lot of freedom upon starting the game.
